Coloross Productions:  Branding

As I continue to become more specific with my new company's mission, vision, and goals (see additional blog below), I am also working towards a recognizable and memorable brand that reflects these standards.   So here is a precise description of Coloross Productions' Name, Slogan, & Logo:

Name:  Coloross Productions
  • The Philosophy:  As an artist I believe that there should be no boundaries or ‘best practices’ concerning creativity.  Whether it is joy or pain, whole or broken, correct or mistaken, life is precious and it is variety—including the occasional imperfections—that create beautiful art.  This philosophy is a big part of who I am and it translates to my work with theatre; so naturally I thought the name of the company should reflect this principle.  The name should also be nonsensical to inspire people to think outside the constricting conventions of our culture.
  • The Backstory:  When I was only an infant, my older sister, Krystle, could not properly pronounce my first and middle names, so ‘coloross’ is what came out. My parents loved the nickname, but it did not stick because my sister eventually learned to pronounce ‘Kyle Ross’ correctly.  Thus, the fantastically catchy and original name was forgotten.  It wasn’t until my college years that my mom, Kathy, remembered the nickname and I started to relate to the word deeply and I even coined it as a sort of creative process.
  • The Result: Coloross Productions was the consequence of a child’s mispronunciation and it has transformed into something evocative and interesting.  To the casual observer who doesn’t know the backstory, the name evokes many interpretations… and that is perfect.  Hence, the name aligns with company’s mission to create experimental theatre.
Slogan:  ‘ ENTER THE ACTION  ’  or simply,  ‘ ENTER: ACTION '
  • The phrase is a play on the word interaction and encourages an audience to get involved.  The shortened catchphrase can also imply a stage direction, 'Enter,' as is often written in a script.
Logo: The ArtStar  (Shown Below)
  • Description: The iconic geometric symbol that represents the company is simple, yet  transformative.  In its most generic form, the ArtStar is a star made up of four outlined, overlapping right-triangles of different size and directional orientation.  All four triangles are concurrent at the center of the image to create one distinct shape.  Because they intersect, It is possible with some practice to draw the shape in one continuous motion.
  • Use: The logo will often transform in size, proportion, fill, occupancy, color, and texture to represent the theme of each specific event or art form, though always maintaining recognizability as the ArtStar.  Each triangle can represent a specific genre of art or personify a character.  Contact Kyle Blanchard for specific examples or more details.

As I embark on this journey to organize and incorporate a new theatre company from scratch, I realize that I need the world to know and clearly understand the mission of the nonstock organization from the start.  So here is a description of the current Mission and Goals of Coloross Productions!

Mission Statement:  Coloross Productions is here to bring stories to life in educational, immersive, and experimental theatre adventures.

Explanation of terms:
  • ‘stories’ can be any literature, image, movement, or event that implies a message to be expressed
  • ‘life’ is any tangible, visible, or audible representation of said stories
  • 'educational’ here means anything that broadens a person's knowledge of creation or expands his or her ability to empathize, and think critically or abstractly
  • ‘immersive’ is to be submerged in an interactive, exploratory, and translational experience
  • ‘experimental’ is anything that may be unconventional, uncomfortable, countercultural, or untried
  • ‘theatre adventures’ means that performers and patrons interact in any imaginable atmosphere, to any conceivable degree; the resulting excitement is encouraged by performers and experienced by patrons.

...So basically Coloross Productions will produce anything and everything outside your perceived notion of conventional theatre entertainment.  This may involve:

  • Promenade (walk-through) Theatre,
  • Outdoor Theatre,
  • Reenactment Events,
  • Experimental 'Happenings,'
  • Educational & Community Outreach,
  • Holiday & Special Events

Goals: Coloross Productions will:
  • become a non-profit, professional theater company
  • have the freedom to produce experimental theatre events in any found space in any city
  • develop the Promenade Theatre Project, which will:
    • bring the history of Downtown Lynchburg back to life in a walk-through environment
    • become a lasting landmark of Lynchburg’s downtown art and tourism scene
    • provide a consistent evening job for up to 30 local actors and technicians
    • include a Tavern/Cafe/Performing art space for special events
    • function as a museum, and box office during the day

    Blanch Blog:

This is a safe zone for me to record artistic growth.  This may include: character research, behind the scenes peeks, expounding on the places I travel, interesting interactions with other humans, lessons I've learned, advice for other artists, or anything that strikes me as inspiring on any given day!

Don't expect great writing.  But maybe do expect funny rambling thoughts.
